   I’m scouting for a new hardtail at the moment and am really liking the look of the Ragley M74, although somewhat unsure about the 1×9 transmission setup. Hill riding is my thing, but my current bike also doubles as my work commuter during the week, this has a 3×8 transmission and I use those extra gears to pound out the flats. With the 1×9 on the Ragley i’m wondering just how much of a speed sacrifice i’ll have to take. Are you able to give me some guidance regarding this issue of mine? Also would you be so kind as to measure the diameter of the Truvativ Blaze 34T fitted on the ragley? Thanks very much.

     Hi Julien and thanks for your e.mail.

     The Ragley M74 is a very good compromise of gears for terrain such as trail centres like Gisburn etc.
     I think you will find yourself running out of gears quite quickly if you are doing quite a lot of road miles on the
     bike when you consider the largest chainring on your 3×8 is most likely a 42 tooth. I run a single sprocket set up on my own mountain bike and find great for
     trail centres, a lot of the natural xc riding around Skipton and even along the canal. The single ring on the front with its chain device is more secure and the chain won’t jump off. The other upside is you are doing away with a front mech, cables and a shifter = less weight and less to go wrong and replace. I have a Ragley M74 in stock at the minute and you are more than welcome to take it for a quick ride around outside the shop and see how it feels for you.

       Thanks for the reply Oliver, I’d love to come and take a look at the M74 in person. Next Saturday seems likely, May 25th, so I’ll phone the Friday before or even first thing Saturday to make sure it’s still in stock. One more thing, if I end up liking the bike enough to get one, would you be able to order me one in the size/colour I prefer? I’d be after the 20 inch version in orange.

         We have an 18″ orange in at the minute which you can have a go on.
         If you end up liking it we can order the 20″ model in within a couple of days. See you on the 25th.
